WBU Press Release: International Day of Persons with Disabilities  December 3rd, 2016

The World Blind Union has released the following press release about the topics of International Day of Persons with Disabilities.  They are particularly excited about goal #8 which is to ”promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.”  This lies very closely to their goals this year.  The following includes interesting attachments from the WBU and the CNIB on the topic of employment.


BC – Accessibility & Inclusion Consultation Job Postings

As part of Accessibility 2024 initiative to make BC the most progressive place in Canada for persons with disabilities, the government of BC has appointed a Presidents Group of CEO’s and key influencers to increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities in BC. The Presidents Group has undertaken a Pathfinding Project to actively encourage employers in a number of different sectors to hire more people with disabilities, with a commitment to share their collective learnings on the recruitment, hiring and retention of employees with disabilities with other employers.

The Presidents Group is hiring two Accessibility & Inclusion Consultants to support the Presidents Group’s Pathfinding Project. These consultants will work with the disability and business communities to research, pilot and develop a toolkit of resources, approaches and processes that will support increased employment success rates for people with disabilities.

The “let’s get it out there” tele town hall team would like to express their thanks to all of those who attended on Oct 29. To those who took the time to participate by phone and listen in via the stream, thank you!
This meeting was an overwhelming success in that participants got a rare and unique opportunity to have their voices heard and to express their opinions and make suggestions. Our team will be meeting in the next two weeks to formulate next steps and

UN Preparations for International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The UN theme for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) for December 3rd, 2016 is “Achieving 17 Goals for the Future We Want,” drawing attention to the Sustainable Development Goals and how they can create a more inclusive and equitable world for persons with disabilities. This IDPD is very important as 2016 is the 10thanniversary of the CRPD and it will be an opportunity for everyone to take stock of the achievements made over the last decade.
There will be IDPD events at the UN New York Headquarters on December 2nd as well as elsewhere around the world on the 2nd and 3rd. You can learn more by visiting the UN page at the following link:
