Ontario Announces Significant Improvements to the Assistive Devices Program
Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB) is proud to share a significant advancement for Ontarians with vision loss following the announcement of the proposed Cutting Red Tape, Building Ontario Act, 2024. This legislation, introduced as part of Ontario’s Fall 2024 Red Tape Reduction Package, demonstrates the province’s commitment to modernizing the Assistive Devices Program (ADP) and reducing administrative barriers for individuals who rely on its services.
The proposed changes reflect a willingness to streamline and simplify the ADP, making it more accessible and user–friendly for clients and service providers alike. Central to these updates is the elimination of annual reauthorization requirements for mobility aids, a longstanding barrier that created unnecessary delays and burdened clients. By modernizing these processes,
Ontario is enabling faster access to essential supports and allowing service providers to focus their efforts on delivering critical care.
This is a meaningful step forward for the 466,000 Ontarians who are blind, deaf–blind, or partially sighted. Simplifying the ADP process will empower individuals with vision loss to navigate their lives with greater ease and independence, while ensuring more efficient use of resources within the system.
The Canadian Council of the Blind extends its gratitude to the Government of Ontario and all partners and stakeholders who contributed to this important initiative. This achievement is a testament to the power of collaboration and advocacy, reflecting the commitment of community groups, service providers, and government representatives to improving the lives of Ontarians with vision loss.
The CCB is encouraged by the government’s responsiveness and looks forward to continuing its efforts to ensure equitable access to vital services for all Canadians living with vision loss.
